The Birth of National Redhead Day

The Vendetti sisters- Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti are credited for creating this day in 2011.

The redhead sisters wanted red-haired beauties to feel special and empowered for their hair color and created a day as a comeback to the negative posts on a site called "Kick a Ginger Day".

They also released a beauty book together known as "How to Be a Redhead

However, the Dutch are believed to have originally created this day in 2005 in the Netherlands and celebrate by having a festival on the first weekend of September for two days.

The Charm of Red Hair

The different shades of red are often associated with a fiery and distinctive appearance that can range from strawberry blonde to deep auburn with true red being the rarest shade.

Apart from the color, there are a few unique qualities that set red hair apart, one being a genetic rarity.

Red hair is mainly a product of a genetic mutation in the MC1R gene that causes the excess secretion of the pheomelanin pigment. The pheomelanin pigment is responsible for the reddish hue of the hair and overproduction of it causes hair to completely turn red.

Redheads are often sensitive to sunlight due to the lack of protective melanin which causes them to have fair skin.
