International Day for Biological Diversity

Next Thursday, 22 May 2025

The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed on May 22 annually and reminds us of the importance of protecting the life on Earth.

From animals to plants to the whole ecosystem, biodiversity supports everything one needs to survive like clean water, a stable climate and food.

This day encourages people around the world to learn about biodiversity and take action to protect it.

The theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 is “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”

What is Biological Diversity

Biological diversity, or biodiversity for short, is the variety of all living things on Earth, plants, animals, fungi, and even tiny microbes, and the ecosystems they live in. It includes:

  • Species diversity: the different kinds of animals, plants, and organisms.
  • Genetic diversity: the differences in DNA within a species.
  • Ecosystem diversity: The range of habitats and environments, like forests, oceans, deserts, and wetlands.

Biodiversity is important because it keeps ecosystems balanced, helps provide us with food, clean air, and medicine, and supports all life on Earth, including us humans.

Origin of International Day For Biological Diversity

The International Day for Biological Diversity was started by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993.

It was created to honor the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity, an international agreement that focuses on protecting biodiversity and using it in ways that are sustainable.

From 1993 to 2000, this special day was celebrated on December 29, which was the day the Convention officially came into effect.

But in December 2000, the UN decided to change the date to May 22.

This was done in honor of May 22, 1992, when the Convention was first adopted.at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro.

Another reason for the change was to avoid the busy holiday season at the end of December.

Biodiversity also plays a big part in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are part of a global plan for a better and more sustainable future.

Its importance was recognized in a major UN document from the Rio+20 conference called “The World We Want: A Future for All.”

Previous Years' Themes

  • 2022: Building a shared future for all life
  • 2023: From agreement to action: Build back biodiversity
  • 2024: Be Part of the Plan

How to Observe International Day For Biological Diversity

On the International Day for Biological Diversity, individuals are encouraged to take meaningful action to support the protection of the natural world.

Planting native species in home gardens or balconies helps maintain local ecosystems. Supporting local and organic farms promotes sustainable agricultural practices.

Reducing plastic usage and recycling properly contribute to minimizing environmental harm. Educating others about the importance of biodiversity raises awareness and fosters collective responsibility.

Participating in conservation programs or community clean-up efforts directly aids environmental preservation.

Advocating for policies that safeguard ecosystems is vital for long-term sustainability.

This day is not merely an occasion for symbolic gestures, but a call to live more mindfully, act responsibly, and recognize that humans are a part of biodiversity, not apart from it.
