International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Next Friday, 17 October 2025

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty observed on October 17 every year reminds us that poverty is more than lacking money.

This day helps us recognize that underprivileged people are being deprived of basic human necessities such as water, food, shelter, education, healthcare, etc.

On this day, organizations, governments and individuals across the world are urged to take the necessary steps to end poverty.

The theme for International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2025 is Ending social and institutional maltreatment

Background

On October 17, 1987, more than 100,000 people came together in Paris to honor and pay tribute to the victims hunger, violence and extreme poverty.

In Trocadéro Plaza, a commemorative stone was unveiled with words that connected the link between human rights and poverty.

Recognizing the importance of that moment, the United Nations officially declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 1992.

Since then, it has been observed globally every year.

The Importance of This Day

  • People living under dire conditions do not even have access to the necessities and do not get enough respect in society.
  • The day highlights the importance of listening to those who experience poverty firsthand. Their perspectives are essential in creating solutions.
  • Ending poverty requires cooperation across governments, communities, and individuals. It is not just a social issue but a moral responsibility.

How It Is Observed

Every year several events, campaigns, workshops, and activities happen worldwide, and you can volunteer in it.

Many communities also gather around replicas of the Paris commemorative stone, renewing the pledge to fight poverty and protect human rights.

You can support local NGOs and organizations that are dedicated to work against poverty and spread awareness on social media.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty reminds us that poverty is not an unchangeable fact of life, is a challenge we can overcome.

By working together and valuing the dignity of every human being, we move closer to building a world where no one is left behind.
