Kargil Vijay Diwas
On July 26 every year, India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas when the entire country comes to a standstill to mourn and remember the unwavering, valor, courage, and patriotism shown by the Indian soldiers.
The day etched in the heart of the nation, marks the triumph of Indian armed forces during the 1999 Kargil War over infiltrators.
This day is carved into the snow-covered heights of the Himalayas as the fierce battle was fought in the dangerous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, where oxygen was scarce but bravery knew no bounds.
The war saw Indian forces heroically reclaim strategic mountain posts that had been stealthily occupied by Pakistani intruders in the Kargil sector of Ladakh.
From the roaring hills of Dras to the silent tears of a grateful nation, Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us freedom comes at a price, and our soldiers paid it with their blood, courage, and unwavering dedication.
A Salute To The Brave
Kargil Vijay Diwas is a heartfelt tribute to the 527 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in service of the nation. Their unmatched bravery and dedication ensured the success of Operation Vijay, the military operation launched by India to flush out the infiltrators and restore Indian control over the region.
On this day, the Prime Minister of India pays homage at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, located at India Gate in New Delhi. .
The Road to Kargil
It is said that the cause of the Kargil conflict were created during the winter of 1998-1999 while peace talks were in process and both nations signed the Lahore Declaration.
Suddenly, Pakistani troops and paramilitary forces secretly infiltrated Indian territory across the Line of Control (LoC), disguised as militants.
Code-named Operation Badri, this planned incursion aimed to sever the link between Kashmir and Ladakh, disrupt Indian positions at Siachen Glacier, and internationalize the Kashmir issue.
What initially seemed like a minor skirmish quickly escalated into a full-scale war once the true scale of infiltration, estimated at around 130–200 sq km, became clear.
Operation Vijay
India’s response was swift and decisive. Operation Vijay was launched with the mobilization of over 200,000 Indian troops.
The war was fought in some of the toughest terrains on Earth, at altitudes of over 18,000 feet, with freezing temperatures and steep cliffs.
By 26 July 1999, Indian forces successfully recaptured most of the infiltrated positions. The day was declared Kargil Vijay Diwas, symbolizing India’s victory, unity, and national pride.
