National Suicide Prevention Month

Next Monday, 1 September 2025

National Suicide Prevention Month is recognized every year in the month of September staring from September 1.

During this whole month, communities, organizations, and individuals across the United States come together to address the cause.

Groups such as National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), and many other mental health organizations support the observance to normalize the conversation around mental health.

National Suicide Prevention Month was established to extend the awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 and National Suicide Week on September 7. However, all of these contribute to the same cause.

Origin of National Suicide Prevention Month

The roots of National Suicide Prevention Month goes back to the larger landscape of the mental health initiative in the United States.

National Suicide Prevention Month aims to shine spotlight on the nationwide difficulties faced by the population.

This simple yet effective idea of dedicating a whole month to encourage and support survivors, those who lost their lives, and their families has shown great results.

Ever since its inception, the month has developed into a national movement with major sectors such as education, healthcare, workplaces, participating in the movement.

The Purple And Blue Ribbon

The purple and blue ribbon used during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month carries profound emotional and symbolic meaning.

Purple represents compassion, empathy, and remembrance, honoring the lives lost to suicide while showing solidarity with survivors and loved ones affected.

It reflects emotional sensitivity and the importance of kindness toward those struggling with mental health. Blue, on the other hand, symbolizes hope, healing, and advocacy, encouraging trust, safety, and open conversations while highlighting the commitment to raising awareness and promoting mental health resources.

Together, these colors form a powerful visual reminder that every life matters and that through compassion, connection, and advocacy, we can help prevent suicide and support those in need.

How to Participate in National Suicide Prevention Month

You can get involved in several ways whether by joining campaigns or awareness products.

Connect with mental health groups that host campaigns throughout September. You can help with logistics, communications, or outreach.

Share verified information, uplifting messages, and personal experiences on social media using official hashtags like #SuicidePrevention or #BeThe1To.

National Suicide Prevention Month is a reminder that every conversation counts. It encourages people to reach out, check on loved ones, and offer support before it’s too late.

It also amplifies the urgent need for better mental health policies, more accessible care, and stronger community safety nets.

The month serves as a call to action, asking each of us to play a role, whether through advocacy, volunteering, or simply being there for someone who needs to talk.
