Prabodhini Ekadashi

Next Saturday, 1 November 2025

Prabodhini Ekadashi, also known as Devutthana Ekadashi or Kartiki Ekadashi, is a significant Hindu festival observed on the eleventh day of the waxing moon phase, known as Shukla Paksha, in the holy month of Kartika.

In the Gregorian calendar, it usually occurs in October or November.

This spiritually important day marks the end of the four-month period called Chaturmas, during which Lord Vishnu is believed to be in a state of divine sleep.

Prabodhini Ekadashi Date And Timings 2025

Prabodhini Ekadashi in 2025 will be observed on Saturday, 1 November. The Ekadashi tithi begins at 9:11 AM on 1 November and ends at 7:31 AM on 2 November. The fast should be broken on 2 November, 2025, between 1:11 PM and 3:23 PM, after Hari Vasara ends at 12:55 PM.

The Significance of Prabodhini Ekadashi

Prabodhini Ekadashi is not only about Lord Vishnu’s awakening but also encourages devotees to awaken their own spiritual awareness.

Those who observe this day with sincere devotion are believed to receive divine blessings and experience spiritual growth.

This Ekadashi is especially important in the Vaishnava tradition and marks the beginning of several sacred rituals, including the well-known Tulsi Vivah, which celebrates the symbolic wedding of the Tulsi plant.

As per Hindu scriptures, keeping this fast can help clear the burden of past sins, bring prosperity, and deepen one’s spiritual commitment.

It is a day that offers divine blessings, mental clarity, and a chance to return to the path of righteousness.

The Story of Prabodhini Ekadashi

The origin of Prabodhini Ekadashi is linked to a significant cosmic event mentioned in Hindu scriptures.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu entered a deep yogic sleep, or Yoga Nidra, on Devshayani Ekadashi, which occurs in the month of Ashadha, after defeating the demon king Bali and restoring equilibrium to the universe.

He remained in this meditative state during the four-month period of Chaturmas, a time when major religious rituals are usually paused.

On Prabodhini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is believed to awaken, bringing with Him the energy of renewal, purity, and spiritual awakening.

According to legend, observing this Ekadashi is as rewarding as performing sacred fire rituals, offering gold and cows in charity, and undertaking holy pilgrimages to rivers like the Ganges, Yamuna, and Godavari.

Observing Prabodhini Ekadashi

The observance of Prabodhini Ekadashi is marked by fasting, devotion, and spiritual discipline.

Worship of Lord Vishnu is the central focus. Devotees chant the Vishnu Sahasranama, offer Tulsi leaves and flowers, and light oil or ghee lamps to represent the divine awakening of the Lord.

Temples across India, especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat, hold special ceremonies and processions. In Pandharpur, a major pilgrimage site in Maharashtra, thousands of devotees gather to witness the rituals and take part in devotional celebrations.

Many devotees also observe an all-night vigil, staying awake while singing bhajans, reciting scriptures, and meditating on the Lord, honoring His return from cosmic slumber.
