World Milk Day

Next Monday, 1 June 2026

Every year on June 1st, the world raises a glass to one of the oldest foods in human history. World Milk Day is a global celebration dedicated to recognising the importance of milk- its nutrition, its economic impact, and the millions of farmers who produce it every day.

The day is more than a toast to your morning latte. It's a platform for governments, health professionals, dairy farmers, and everyday people to spotlight milk's role in food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural livelihoods around the world.

How It All Started

World Milk Day was founded in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. The FAO wanted a single, unified global day to draw attention to milk as a universal food- one consumed by people across nearly every culture and continent.

Why June 1st? Many countries were already observing their own national dairy celebrations around this time of year. Rather than compete with those, the FAO chose June 1st to bring them together under one global banner.

Celebrate World Milk Day

  • Start the day with a milk moment. Whether it's a glass of cold milk, a chai, a smoothie, or a coffee with steamed milk- make your first drink a dairy one. A simple and satisfying way to mark the day.
  • Visit a local dairy farm. Many farms open their doors on World Milk Day, offering tours, tastings, and a behind-the-scenes look at where your milk actually comes from. It's a grounding experience.
  • Try a new dairy recipe. Use the day as an excuse to make something from scratch: a creamy paneer, a classic béchamel, homemade yoghurt, or a ricotta you churn yourself. Milk transforms into something extraordinary with a little heat and patience.
