National Piña Colada Day
National Piña Colada Day is observed annually on July 10. As the name suggests, this day is dedicated to celebrating one of the most refreshing, fruity tropical cocktails of all time.
With its smooth blend of pineapple, coconut, and rum, this iconic drink is known for evoking a sense of leisure, warmth, and coastal charm.
It has earned a special place in the world of cocktails and continues to be a favorite for many across the globe.
The exact origin of National Piña Colada Day is a bit of a mystery and there is no single known founder of the day.
But, the Piña Colada itself has long been associated with relaxation and tropical vacations, making it a fitting drink to be honored.
Interestingly, Puerto Rico officially declared the Piña Colada as its national drink in 1978, further solidifying its cultural and historical significance.
The History of Piña Colada
The name of Piña Colada is derived from Spanish, meaning “strained pineapple,” which refers to the freshly pressed pineapple juice traditionally used in its preparation.
While the drink is now enjoyed worldwide, its origins are closely connected to Puerto Rico.
According to a popular legend, the piña colada was first served in the early 1800s by Roberto Cofresí, a Puerto Rican pirate.
It is said that he created the drink by combining coconut, pineapple, and rum to boost the spirits of his crew.
After his death in 1825, the recipe reportedly vanished and remained unknown for many years.
References to pineapple-based cocktails began appearing in the early 20th century.
In 1922, Travel magazine mentioned a cocktail made with pineapple juice, rum, lime, and sugar.
In 1924, National Geographic also mentioned similar ingredients, showing the growing popularity of tropical flavors.
The piña colada became popular in the 1950s, thanks to Coco López, a sweet cream of coconut created by Ramón López Irizarry at the University of Puerto Rico.
This ingredient played a key role in giving the drink its smooth and rich texture. Several individuals have claimed to be the true inventor of the drink.
One of the most widely accepted stories credits bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, who reportedly created the first piña colada in 1954 while working at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan.
In 2004 the hotel's contribution was officially recognized by Puerto Rico.
However, other claims also exist. Ricardo García, another bartender at the Caribe Hilton, said he made the drink in 1953.
Additionally, a restaurant in San Juan called Barrachina claims it was first made there in 1963 by Don Ramón Portas Mingot, a bartender from Spain.
Despite ongoing debates over its exact origin, the piña colada was declared Puerto Rico’s official national drink in 1978.
Today, it is recognized as a symbol of the island’s culture and hospitality and continues to be enjoyed around the world.
