Ken Day

National Ken Day is observed annually on March 13 to celebrate the debut of the classic Ken doll. Mattel first introduced Ken, the partner of Barbie, in 1961.

It later became one of the most recognized toy characters across the world. National Ken Day honors the role of Ken in the evolution of pop culture, the Barbie-verse, and the memories attached to the duo.

The History Behind Ken Day

Ken was first seen in 1961 at the American International Toy Fair held in New York City. Ken debuted two years after Barbie’s debut, and his full name is Kenneth Sean Carson.

Ken was named after Kenneth Handler. Kenneth Handler is the son of Barbie and Mattel founders Ruth Handler and her husband, Elliot Handler.

Although there are arguments as to when Ken debuted, as some records state March 11, 1961, and some say March 13.

The original Ken doll is very different from the version available today, as it was around 12 inches tall, was blond or brunette, and wore red swim trunks, sandals, and a yellow towel.

Initially, dolls had felt hair, but it fell off when wet, so Mattel replaced it with molded plastic hair.

Modern versions introduced rooted hairstyles, bendable arms, and many new fashion styles reflecting the trends of each decade, such as the vibrant colors and patterns of the 1980s and the minimalist styles of the 2000s.

How to Celebrate National Ken Day

For fans and collectors, Ken Day is no less than a festival. If you are a collector, you can add to this collection or display your collection and share it with fans.

The holiday is also the ideal opportunity to binge-watch Barbie series and movies featuring Ken. Some kids don't know about Barbie and Ken's nostalgia, so use this day to introduce them. Post photos or facts online using #KenDay
