On April 4, National School Librarian Day is observed to pay tribute to the important and effective role school librarians play in shaping the future of the world.
School librarians work hard, and their duties go way beyond just managing and lending books.
On this day, we honor these individuals as they fuel our curiosity and inspire students by giving them a safe space to explore their imaginations.
In an era where information can be found in the palm of your hand within seconds, school librarians help in building confidence, critical thinking, and patience.
The AASL or American Association of School Librarians established National School Librarian Day in the 1980s.
Lucille Thomas led this initiative as he was appointed by Judy King, the AASL president, to raise awareness about school librarians and their contributions.
History of School Librarians
As education became an important part of society and started growing, school libraries and librarians grew alongside.
School libraries in the early 1800s were limited to small classroom collections or books donated and delivered by public library book wagons.
The role of librarians wasn't officially recognized at this point.
The role started slowly shaping up around the early 1900s as Mary Kingsbury became the first professionally trained school librarian in 1900.
After that, Mary E. Hall became a trained school librarian in 1903.
This was the beginning of a glorious and honorable career.
Ever since, the role and duties of school librarians have only grown, and they are not just book caretakers but actively contribute to a variety of factors.
How to honor School Librarians
We all owe a meaningful acknowledgment to school librarians, and this day is the perfect opportunity to do so.
Let us take a moment to personally extend our gratitude to them by writing a note or card on how they have helped us develop ourselves.
Schools and educational institutions should use this day to host a humble event to appreciate and acknowledge them
You can also celebrate by giving back to the school library. Donate books or supplies, and students can help by taking care of the library for one day.
Even a small gesture of appreciation can remind them that their work doesn’t go unnoticed.
