World Day Against Child Labor
World Day Against Child Labor is observed on June 12 every year to highlight the fact that every child has the right to have a safe childhood and flourish in an environment that is healthy and accessible to education.
Millions of children across the world are still deprived of the basic necessities and have to unfortunately work from a very early age for the bare minimum.
World Day Against Child Labor promotes awareness about this issue and reminds us how important it is to eradicate child labor and protect kids from being exploited.
Governments, educators, organizations, and communities across the world come together to promote a child labor-free world and advocate for children's rights.
It is officially observed and recognized by the member states of the United Nations and supported by organizations across the globe.
Background of World Day Against Child Labor
The International Labour Organization established World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 with the aim of raising awareness and putting an end to it.
Ever since, it has been observed on June 12 every year. This day reminds us that millions of innocent children across the world are being forced to work and take on heavy responsibilities instead of being a child and living their childhood.
The UN General Assembly recognized the seriousness of the problem and announced 2021 as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labor, and the ILO was asked to lead global efforts to eliminate child labor.
As per reports made by the ILO, hundreds of millions of kids are doing work that is depriving them of their basic rights and good health.
These works include slavery, prostitution, forced labor, trafficking, drug rackets, hazardous roles, involvement in armed conflicts, and more.
World Day Against Child Labour reflects on these challenges and increases efforts to build a better and brighter future for every kid.
Why Is Child Labor a Global Concern?
Child labor is work that intersects with a child's childhood, including education, safety, health, and their whole life.
While there are some age-appropriate works, intensive labor that exploits their innocence and possesses great risks can scar them for life.
Child labor can stop children from going to school and harm their physical and mental health. It also increases the risk of abuse and exploitation while limiting future job opportunities.
As a result, it often keeps families trapped in poverty. Ending child labor helps children build better futures and creates stronger communities for future generations.
