This delightfully weird holiday reminds us that not every day needs logic or seriousness. Some days exist purely for laughter… and well gorilla suits.

Origin of National Gorilla Suit Day

While it may sound like a modern internet trend, National Gorilla Suit Day actually dates back more than 60 years. The holiday originated in 1963, thanks to legendary Mad Magazine cartoonist Don Martin.

In one of his iconic comic strips, Don Martin introduced the fictional concept of 'National Gorilla Suit Day.' In the story, a character mocks the holiday only to be hilariously attacked by gorillas and people wearing gorilla suits.

The joke resonated so strongly with fans that they decided to turn the fictional holiday into a real one. Since then, the tradition has lived on among comedy lovers, pop-culture fans, and people who simply enjoy celebrating the wonderfully absurd.

Fun Gorilla Facts!

  • Gorillas are one of humanity’s closest living relatives. They share about 98% of their DNA with humans, making them extremely close cousins on the evolutionary tree.
  • Gorillas travel in troops led by a dominant male called a silverback, who protects and guides the group.
  • Most gorillas are vegetarian. Their diet is mainly leaves, stems, fruit, shoots, and bamboo, though some may eat small insects occasionally.
  • Gorillas walk using their knuckles. Their unique form of locomotion, knuckle-walking, allows them to move on all fours while keeping their hands free for gripping.

National Gorilla Suit Day may sound strange and that’s exactly the point! Go bananas. Wear the suit. Celebrate the nonsense!
