National Coffee Cake Day

Next Tuesday, 7 April 2026

National Coffee Cake Day is celebrated every year on April 7. It is a day to enjoy one of the coziest baked treats around: soft cake, warm cinnamon, buttery crumbs, and that perfect bite with a cup of coffee or tea.

Coffee cake usually means a sweet, rich cake or quick-bread-style bake that is often flavored with cinnamon, fruit, nuts, or spices, and topped with streusel or sometimes a glaze.

Coffee Cakes

A short story behind coffee cake

Food historians trace the tradition of coffee cake to Northern and Central Europe, where sweet baked goods were enjoyed alongside coffee after coffee spread through Europe in the 17th century. Later, German, Dutch, and Scandinavian immigrants carried those baking traditions to America, and by the 1870s the term “coffee cake” had become common in the American vocabulary.

In fact, Germany was apparently the first country to pair cake along with coffee.

How to Make a Simple Coffee Cake at Home

  • Preheat the oven and grease your pan.
  • Beat butter, sugar, and eggs until smooth.
  • In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with sour cream or yogurt.
  • Pour the batter into the pan.
  • Top with a cinnamon-sugar mixture or a crumb topping.
  • Bake until the center is set and a knife or toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool slightly, slice, and serve warm.

Tips for making it taste even better

Sour cream or yogurt helps keep the cake soft and moist. Cinnamon is the classic flavor, but coffee cake also works beautifully with apples, blueberries, lemon, chopped nuts, or a light glaze on top. Streusel is what gives it that bakery-style finish: buttery, crumbly, and impossible to resist.

Fun Facts about Coffee Cake

  • Most traditional coffee cake does not actually contain coffee. In American baking, the name usually comes from the fact that it is eaten with coffee.
  • Coffee cake has European roots. The tradition grew from Central and Northern European baking customs and became a familiar American treat through immigration.
  • It is a very social cake. Many descriptions of coffee cake connect it with lingering conversations, coffee breaks, and sharing food with guests.
