National Garage Sale Day

Next Saturday, 9 August 2025

It is National Garage Sale Day on August 9th, 2025- the second Saturday of August this year!

National Garage Sale Day is a nationwide event that encourages people to host or shop at garage sales, also known as yard sales, tag sales, or rummage sales. It’s a day to clear out unwanted items, make some extra money, and connect with neighbors while offering buyers a chance to snag great deals on unique finds.

From old clothes to vintage treasures, garage sales are a win-win for decluttering and bargain hunting.

The History of National Garage Sale Day

The roots of garage sales trace back to the 19th century when “rummage sales” popped up in port cities, where unclaimed or damaged ship cargo was sold off. The modern garage sale gained traction in the U.S. after World War II, fueled by post-war prosperity and growing homeownership. As people accumulated more stuff, they started selling what they didn’t need right from their driveways or garages.

National Garage Sale Day specifically was born in 2001, all thanks to C. Daniel Rhodes of Hoover, Alabama. Frustrated by neighbors holding sales on different weekends, Rhodes had a lightbulb moment: why not coordinate them for maximum convenience? He created the holiday to bring communities together on one day, making it easier for shoppers to hit multiple sales and for sellers to attract bigger crowds.

What Can You Sell at a Garage Sale

  • Clothing and Accessories: Old t-shirts, jackets, shoes, and purses are hot sellers, especially name-brand items or pieces with tags still on.
  • Books and Media: Old CDs, DVDs, and vinyl records attract collectors. Group them by genre for easy browsing.
  • Toys and Games: Board games, action figures, and puzzles are kid magnets. Ensure pieces are complete to avoid complaints.
  • Furniture: Tables, chairs, and shelves draw DIY enthusiasts. Be ready to help move heavy items.
  • Home Decor: Picture frames, vases, and knickknacks sell well, especially vintage or unique pieces.
  • Tools and Outdoor Gear: Lawn tools, camping equipment, and sports gear are big hits.
  • Electronics and Appliances: Small appliances like toasters or lamps can sell for one-third of retail, but avoid broken items. Have an outlet handy for testing.
  • Antiques and Collectibles: Old diaries, statues, or vintage toys can fetch higher prices if you know their value. Research online to avoid underselling rare finds.Miscellaneous: Kitchenware, fishing rods, and craft supplies often sell fast. Bundle small items (e.g., “3 for $1”) to clear inventory.

What NOT to Sell: Skip used makeup, toiletries, undergarments, or unsafe baby items like car seats and cribs. These are either unsanitary or risky and can turn off buyers.
