The roots of garage sales trace back to the 19th century when “rummage sales” popped up in port cities, where unclaimed or damaged ship cargo was sold off. National Garage Sale Day specifically was born in 2001, all thanks to C. Daniel Rhodes of Hoover, Alabama. Frustrated by neighbors holding sales on different weekends, Rhodes had a lightbulb moment: why not coordinate them for maximum convenience? He created the holiday to bring communities together on one day, making it easier for shoppers to hit multiple sales and for sellers to attract bigger crowds.
