Go immediately hug your Dog because April 10 is Hug Your Dog Day!
Whether your pup is the clingy shadow who follows you from room to room or the dignified little weirdo who prefers affection on their own terms, this day is a reminder of something dog lovers know well: life feels lighter, warmer, and a lot less lonely with a dog in it.
Of course, celebrating this day is not just about wrapping your arms around your pet for a cute photo. It is about understanding how your dog receives affection, what makes them feel safe, and how to make them feel adored in ways they actually enjoy.

Ways to celebrate National Hug Your Dog Day
- Start with your dog’s favourite thing. If your dog enjoys cuddling, give them a brief, gentle hug in a calm moment rather than an enthusiastic squeeze (Lets be honest, we have all been perpetrators of cuteness agression). If they are not a hugger, celebrate in ways that are just as affectionate and often more meaningful to them.
- Take them on a longer-than-usual walk and let them sniff at their own pace. Dogs experience the world heavily through scent, and a relaxed “sniffari” can be more enriching than a rushed walk around the block.
- Offer a dog-safe treat or a special homemade snack approved by your vet. Food is not the only language of love, but it is certainly one many dogs appreciate.
- Set aside device-free time. Sit with your dog, brush them if they enjoy grooming, or give them slow pets on the chest, shoulders, or side of the body. American Kennel Club advises that many dogs prefer petting on the side, neck, back, or chest over hugs or head pats.
- Lastly of course take pictures of hugging your dog and post them on social media with the hashtag #hugyourdogday.
April 10 is a lovely excuse to pause, celebrate your four-legged companion, and make them feel cherished. For one dog, that might mean curling up quietly beside you. For another, it might mean a tennis ball, a long walk, a brush session, or a treat after a training game.
