World Hijab Day

Next Sunday, 1 February 2026

Every year on February 1World Hijab Day is observed globally to raise awareness about hijabs and invite women from all cultures and backgrounds to wear hijab for a day and educate everyone around them more on it.

It is a powerful way to inculcate respect and understanding for the culture and create informed conversations on faith, choice, and identity.

World Hijab Day Origin Story

World Hijab Day was founded by Nazma Khan in 2013. Nazma is a Bangladeshi-American who wanted to raise awareness about the hijab and normalize it by making it more accepted in day-to-day life.

Nazma also wanted this day to encourage religious tolerance and understanding, as she was a victim of bullying during her school and university years.

She was mocked, kicked, and terrorized by being called a terrorist due to her hijab, and by establishing World Hijab Day, she wanted to make sure no one goes through the same experience ever again.

Laws like Quebec’s Bill 21 that restricted people working in the public sector from donning physical religious symbols were also the reason behind the creation of this day.

World Hijab Day is now acknowledged globally in more than 140 countries, making it one of the most popular cultural awareness days associated with women's rights and religious freedom.

The Significance of the Hijab

The hijab is a head wrap worn by several Muslim women as a symbol of faith, modesty, and personal belief.

Hijabs are available in different forms and styles, and the way of wearing them differs by country, culture, and personal preferences.

Global Recognition and Support

World Hijab Day has received official recognition in several parts of the world.

  • New York State officially recognized the day in 2017
  • Events have been hosted at the UK House of Commons
  • The Philippines declared February 1 as National Hijab Day in 2021

These recognitions highlight the growing importance of conversations around faith, women’s rights, and freedom of expression.

Controversies

World Hijab Day has also had its fair share of controversies, with some critics arguing that it does not fully address the struggles of women who are forced to wear the hijab in several countries.

Others believe the focus should be more strongly placed on choice. Supporters of the day emphasize that its core message is understanding and respect, not pressure or enforcement.

These discussions, while complex, underline why open dialogue is important and why awareness days like this continue to matter.

How to Observe World Hijab Day

World Hijab Day can be observed in simple and meaningful ways that focus on awareness, respect, and inclusion.

One way to participate is by learning about the hijab and what it represents to Muslim women through articles, videos, or personal stories.

Many people choose to wear a hijab for the day as a gesture of solidarity and understanding, while others take part by sharing accurate information and positive messages on social media.

Attending community events, discussions, or school activities centered on cultural awareness also helps create space for open and respectful conversations.

Most importantly, observing World Hijab Day means listening without judgment, respecting personal choices, and standing against stereotypes so everyone feels seen, safe, and valued.
