March Forth

Next Wednesday, 4 March 2026

March Forth Day is observed every year on March 4. Like you already heard, March 4 sounds like March forth. Over time, it has become an unofficial motivational observance about moving forward, starting something meaningful, and not waiting forever for the perfect moment.

The idea is simple: if there is something you want to begin, fix, learn, write, say, or finally stop procrastinating on, March 4 is your nudge to do it. So March forth on this day everyone!

Who started March Forth Day

The motivational version of March Forth Day is most commonly credited to writer and creativity coach Deborah Shouse. On her own site, Shouse explains that as a child she came across a riddle asking, “What is the only day of the year that tells you to go forward?” The answer was “March Fourth,” and she says the date stayed with her ever since.

March 4 also used to be one of the most important dates in American government. For many years, it was Inauguration Day in the United States. From George Washington’s second term through Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first, presidents were generally inaugurated on March 4, not January 20.

That changed after the 20th Amendment, ratified in 1933, moved presidential inaugurations to January 20 and the start of Congress to January 3.

How to Celebrate March Forth Day

On this March 4, stop procrastinating and start doing something that you always wanted to do, did not have time to do or wanted to do later. It can be something as simple as:

  • Starting a workout routine
  • Organizing your room
  • Applying for a Job
  • Doing your laundry (yes even this counts!)
