National Raisin Day is observed every year on April 30 to appreciate one of the most versatile yet accessible raisins.

These small, wrinkled fruits that might not be very good-looking carry a lot of nutrition, decades worth of history and magic in every fistful.

From stirring it in dough to tossing it into chocolates, raisins show up in silence all around us.

National Raisin Day gives them the spotlight they deserve.

The story of raisins goes back to 2000 BC when they were first discovered in ancient Egypt.

During this era, dried grapes were also used as currency, and raisins were easy to store, naturally sweet, and also loaded with energy.

With time, raisins spread through Rome and Greece and then appeared across Europe.

Way before refined sugar, raisins were used as a sweetener.

Raisin growers in California officially established National Raisin Day in 1909.

The day was heavily promoted through flyers, newspapers, and radio encouraging people to incorporate raisins into their food.

Celebrating National Raisin Day

On National Raisin Day, start by baking the underrated yet heavenly oatmeal raisin cookies from scratch and pair it with your morning coffee.

Then you can try baking bread or cakes with raisins.

Use this day as an opportunity to add raisins in every meal of your choice.

If you want to level up, try making raisin wine at home.

If you want to do none of the above, then just grab a handful of raisins straight from the container and munch on them as a snack.

National Raisin Day is about recognizing how something simple has had its own journey through centuries and cultures.
