National Sunflower Day

Next Saturday, 2 August 2025

Every first Saturday of August, we tip our hats to the radiant giants of the flower world- sunflowers on National Sunflower Day. These golden blooms aren't just a pretty face; they're nature's cheerleaders, turning fields into seas of yellow and hearts into pools of joy.

This special day was started by the combined efforts of the National Sunflower Association along with the North Dakota Tourism Division.

Why Sunflowers Are Special

  • They Track the Sun: Sunflowers are famous for heliotropism, meaning they twist their heads to follow the sun from dawn to dusk. It’s like they’re dancing with the daylight, soaking up every ray to grow tall sometimes over 12 feet!

  • Symbols of Positivity: Across cultures, sunflowers stand for happiness, loyalty, and vitality. Their bright faces scream optimism, making them a go-to for bouquets meant to lift spirits.

  • Eco-Warriors: Sunflowers don't just look good, they also do good. Their deep roots can clean soil by pulling out toxins. Plus, their seeds feed birds, bees, and humans alike.

How to Celebrate National Sunflower Day

  • Grab some sunflower seeds and start a mini garden. Even a small pot on your balcony can yield a cheerful bloom.
  • Find a local farm or sunflower maze for a day of wandering through towering blooms. Perfect for photos, picnics, or just basking in nature’s glow.
  • Paint, draw, or craft sunflower-inspired art. Channel your inner Van Gogh or make a sunflower wreath for your door.
  • Whip up a batch of sunflower seed granola, cookies, or a nutty salad topping. They're packed with vitamin E and healthy fats.
  • Gift a bouquet of sunflowers to a friend or neighbor. It’s a simple way to share joy and brighten someone’s day.
  • Post a sunflower fact or photo on social media with #NationalSunflowerDay  so that everyone can join in on this beautiful day.
