Alien Day
Alien Day is celebrated every year on April 26. Fans of science fiction, and horror you all have been summoned!
At first, the name may sound like a day about UFOs, alien sightings, or little green men. But Alien Day is actually connected to one of the most famous sci-fi horror film franchises ever made called Alien. In fact, the date 4/26 is not random. It is a smart reference to LV-426, the lonely moon in the Alien universe where humans first come face to face with the deadly Xenomorph species.
History and Origin of Alien Day
The modern version of Alien Day was first officially promoted in 2016 by 20th Century Fox, during the 30th anniversary year of James Cameron’s Aliens, the 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott’s original 1979 film.
The first Alien film, directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1979, changed science-fiction cinema forever. Before that, many space films showed space travel as exciting, heroic, or glamorous. But Alien showed something very different.
It showed a tired commercial crew aboard the Nostromo- ordinary people doing a dangerous job for a powerful company. Then came the creature: silent, strange, biomechanical, terrifying, and almost impossible to stop.
In 1986, James Cameron’s Aliens expanded the universe into action-horror. It also turned Ellen Ripley into one of cinema’s most iconic survivors. Over the years, the franchise grew through sequels, prequels, comics, novels, games, merchandise, and theatrical rereleases. Alien Day came from this strong fandom. It became a day for studios, publishers, and fans to release special editions, host screenings, share fan art, run trivia contests, and watch the films again.
Celebrate Alien Day
- The easiest way to celebrate Alien Day is to watch the movies. Beginners can start with Ridley Scott’s Alien for pure horror, then move to James Cameron’s Aliens for action, emotion, and bigger stakes.
- Host an Alien-themed movie night. Make the night feel special. Use low lighting, metallic decorations, warning-sign posters, “quarantine zone” labels, and a simple menu inspired by space survival food.
- The Alien universe goes far beyond the films.
- Fans can use Alien Day to explore comics, novelisations, art books, and behind-the-scenes production histories. These books and stories often show how much design, thought, and world-building went into the franchise. The creature itself was inspired by the surreal biomechanical art of H.R. Giger. Even today, it remains one of the most unforgettable monster designs in cinema history.
- Design your own planet. Create a fictional exomoon like LV-426. Give it a climate, atmosphere, danger level, mission objective, and warning label. This can be a fun classroom activity, creative workshop idea, or social media challenge.
