Multiple Personality Day

Next Thursday, 5 March 2026

National Multiple Personality Day is observed every year on March 5. The day sits at an unusual intersection: part self-reflection, part mental health awareness.

For some people, it is a reminder that all of us show different sides of ourselves depending on where we are, who we are with, and what life is asking from us. For others, it is a day to learn about dissociative identity disorder (DID), the mental health condition once commonly called multiple personality disorder.

Learn about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

DID was formerly called multiple personality disorder, and that older name remained in use until the diagnosis was renamed in the 1990s. Modern psychiatric sources place DID within the family of dissociative disorders, which involve disruptions in memory, identity, perception, and sense of self.

Mental health organizations describe DID as involving two or more distinct identity states, along with gaps in memory that go beyond ordinary forgetfulness. A person may experience lost time, feel disconnected from themselves or their surroundings, or struggle with abrupt shifts in how they think, feel, or relate to the world.

Research and clinical guidance also consistently connect dissociative disorders with trauma. The American Psychiatric Association says dissociative disorders are frequently associated with previous trauma, and notes that childhood abuse and neglect are major risk factors for DID.

How to Observe Multiple Personality Day

Read from real mental health sources

Spend a little time with trustworthy material from groups such as the American Psychiatric Association, NAMI, the NHS, or major medical centers. These sources explain dissociation in a way that is far more helpful than movie plots or social media myths.

Challenge a myth when you hear one

If someone repeats the idea that people with DID are dangerous, manipulative, or “just making it up,” this is a good day to correct that gently. One of the most useful things awareness days can do is interrupt misinformation before it settles in.

Share something useful, not sensational

If you post about the day, share a fact, a resource, or a thoughtful reflection. Skip the overdramatic captions. Awareness works best when it leaves people better informed than they were five minutes ago.
