National Cosmopolitan Day
National Cosmopolitan Day is celebrated every year on May 7 which, as luck would have it, is today. It's a day dedicated to one of the most recognizable cocktails in the world: the Cosmopolitan. The holiday was created by freelance writer and self-described "queen of holidays" Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, who has invented dozens of food and drink observances.
The key to making a beautiful cosmopolitan is using a good non-alcoholic spirit as the base (Lyre's White Cane Spirit or Seedlip Spice work well), adding real lime juice, a dash of orange bitters, and a small pour of quality cranberry juice. Shake it as hard as you'd shake the real thing, and serve in a properly chilled glass. The ritual matters just as much as the alcohol.
Origin of Cosmopolitan
The origin of the Cosmopolitan is, fittingly, a little dramatic. Several bartenders have staked their claim to its invention, but the most widely credited story points to Toby Cecchini, a New York bartender who developed his version of the drink in 1988 at the Odeon in Manhattan. His recipe- citrus vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and cranberry is the one most bartenders follow today.
But Toby wasn't working entirely from scratch. A cruder version of the Cosmo had been circulating in the gay bar scene in Provincetown, Massachusetts and in Miami through the early 1980s, made with plain vodka and Rose's lime cordial. Cecchini refined and elevated it.
When Sex and the City debuted in 1998, the Cosmopolitan became Carrie Bradshaw's drink of choice. Within a few seasons, it had transcended cocktail culture entirely and become a symbol of sophistication, female friendship, and a particular glossy vision of urban life.
Celebrate Cosmopolitan Day
- Host a Cosmo night on this day. Gather friends, chill the glasses in advance, and make a round. It's a social drink best enjoyed with company.
- Try a mezcal Cosmo, a blood orange version, or a non-alcoholic Cosmo. The formula adapts beautifully to experimentation.
- Put on early Sex and the City episodes and have one while you watch. It's basically the official pairing.
- Visit a good bar. Ask a skilled bartender for their house Cosmo. Many put their own signature spin on it.
