National Tourism Day

Next Thursday, 7 May 2026

Every May 6th, the United States pauses to honor one of its most beloved traditions: the freedom to explore. National Tourism Day isn't just a calendar notation, it's a collective nod to the road trips, national park adventures, coastal getaways, and small-town discoveries that have shaped American identity for generations.

Whether you're the type to chase waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest or hunt for the perfect barbecue joint in Texas Hill Country, this day belongs to you!

History of National Tourism Day

The establishment of this day can be traced back to the 1980s, a decade when domestic tourism became a significant economic force. The U.S. Travel Association (formerly the Travel Industry Association of America) and state tourism boards began promoting the first week of May as National Travel and Tourism Week, with May 6th designated as the anchor celebration.

Why May? The timing is strategic. Early May marks the unofficial start of summer travel season- school years winding down, weather warming across most of the country, and Memorial Day weekend on the horizon. Tourism organizations saw an opportunity to spotlight the industry's economic contributions and inspire Americans to plan their warm-weather adventures.

America's Greatest Hits: Iconic Places to Visit

The National Parks

No conversation about American tourism starts anywhere else. The National Park System often called "America's best idea" protects 63 designated national parks and hundreds of monuments, seashores, and historic sites.

  • Yellowstone (Wyoming/Montana/Idaho) remains the crown jewel, with its geothermal wonders, bison herds, and the reliable drama of Old Faithful.
  • Grand Canyon (Arizona) offers that rare experience where reality exceeds every photograph you've seen.
  • Zion and Bryce Canyon (Utah) deliver red rock formations that look like another planet.
  • Acadia (Maine) pairs rugged Atlantic coastline with forested mountains- quintessential New England.
  • Great Smoky Mountains (Tennessee/North Carolina) draws more visitors than any other park, offering mist-shrouded ridges and biodiversity rivaling tropical rainforests.

Cities That Define American Culture

  • New York City needs no introduction- Broadway, Central Park, world-class museums, and neighborhoods that each feel like distinct cities.
  • New Orleans serves up jazz, Creole cuisine, and a cultural blend found nowhere else on Earth.
  • San Francisco offers Victorian architecture, fog-draped bridges, and a food scene that rivals any global capital.
  • Nashville has evolved from country music capital to a broader cultural hub, with honky-tonks sharing space with James Beard-nominated restaurants.
  • Chicago delivers architecture, deep-dish pizza, lakefront beauty, and Midwestern warmth.

How to Celebrate National Tourism Day

Plan Your Next Adventure

May 6th falls at the perfect moment for summer planning. Use the day to:

  • Research destinations you've always meant to visit
  • Book accommodations before peak-season prices hit
  • Map out a road trip route
  • Finally commit to that national parks pass

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

Most people overlook attractions within a short drive of home. Challenge yourself to visit a local museum, historic site, or natural area you've never explored. Take a walking tour of your own downtown. Eat at that restaurant you always drive past.
