National Drink Wine Day

Next Wednesday, 18 February 2026

Calling all the wine lovers across the world to clink their glasses together as February 18 is National Drink Wine Day.

After a long, hectic day, sometimes, all we need to unwind is our favorite glass of wine and a silent corner by the window.

National Drink Wine Day is the perfect excuse for you to drink as much as you want but be responsible.

National Drink Wine Day should not be confused with National Wine Day, observed on May 25.

The origins of National Drink Wine Day are unclear, but it is believed to have been created during 2007-2009 in the United States.

History of Wine

Wine has one of the most interesting histories, dating back thousands of years.

Archaeological discoveries in different eras showed that ancient civilization has been fermenting grapes for a long time, and the oldest known winery was discovered in the Areni-1 cave in Armenia.

Wine also had a significant role in mythology and religion. Dionysus was the god of wine and celebration in ancient Greece.

Romans had their own version of Dionysus known as Bacchus.

Wine became a symbolic tradition during the Last Supper of Jesus in Christianity.

With the increase in civilization, viticulture saw a rapid expansion too.

Grapevines came to America through European explorers, and vineyards were introduced in South America and parts of North America through Spanish missionaries.

Places like California and Argentina later became major wine producers around the world.

Even after the severe phylloxera outbreak in the 19th century damaged many vineyards, modern science helped revive them and improve how wine is made.

Celebrating National Drink Wine Day

Celebrating National Drink Wine Day is as simple as it sounds: you drink wine. Enjoy a cozy evening with a glass of wine at your home and pair it with your favorite food.

You can visit a local vineyard or winery to taste some new varieties. Share your moments on social media with the hashtag #NationalDrinkWineDay.

National Drink Wine Day is not about excess. It is about appreciation. It celebrates centuries of history, culture, science, and craftsmanship poured into a single glass.

So on February 18, pour responsibly, savor slowly, and toast to the timeless story of wine.

Some Facts About Wine

  • Wine contains antioxidants, especially red wine, which are linked to certain health benefits when consumed in moderation.
  • Wine glasses should be held by the stem. Holding the bowl can warm the wine and alter its intended temperature.
  • Wine is best stored horizontally so the cork remains moist and does not dry out.
  • The swirling motion before sipping helps release the wine’s aromas.
  • The concept of terroir refers to how soil, climate, and geography influence the taste of wine.
  • Many wines, particularly high-quality reds, can improve with age due to chemical changes that develop complex flavors over time.
  • Countries such as France and Italy use official classification systems to regulate wine quality and origin.
