National Library Day
Readers and Writers gather as National Library Day is finally here on April 6! For some people, a library is childhood. For others, it is Wi-Fi, job applications, exam prep, air-conditioning, or a place to think. For millions, it is all of those things at once.
National Library Day is a chance to celebrate more than the book shelves and silence. It is a reminder of what libraries really are: public access to knowledge, community, and opportunity.

History of Libraries in the US
The roots of libraries go back to the ancient world, when civilizations in Babylonia and Mesopotamia kept written records on clay tablets.
In early America, libraries were mostly a private structure accessible to a few. However, a key milestone came in 1731, when Benjamin Franklin proposed and helped create the Library Company of Philadelphia, described by the Library of Congress as America’s first subscription library.
The federal story began in 1800, when Congress appropriated money for books to be housed in the Capitol, creating what became the Library of Congress. That early collection was destroyed when the British burned the Capitol in 1814. In 1815, Congress approved the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library to rebuild it. Today the Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution and the largest library in the world.
In the 1820s and 30s, this form of subscription libraries also penetrated the Black communities in urban north.
Through the 19th century, the American library changed shape. As the Library of Congress notes in its history of library design, the earliest American libraries were often small, private, or tied to colleges and associations. But by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the public lending library as we recognize it began to emerge more clearly. That meant a shift toward open access, practical design, and services for more people, including children’s reading rooms and greater public access to shelves that had once been closed off.
Celebrate National Library Day
- Start with the obvious: visit your local library. Get a library card if you do not already have one. Borrow something in a format you usually ignore: an audiobook, an ebook, a graphic novel, a film, a language-learning resource, or a local history title.
- Then go one step further. Attend a program. Many libraries are not just lending spaces; they are event spaces, teaching spaces, and community spaces. Depending on where you live, that may mean a reading group, job help, a children’s program, a makerspace workshop, a local election service, or outreach through a mobile library.
- Even something as simple as thanking a librarian or library worker in person for their service is meaningful way to celebrate this day.
