Olympic Day is observed on June 23 as a global day of appreciation of movement, sport, and the Olympic principles of friendship, excellence, and respect.

This day is an honor to the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 23, 1984, which also gave birth to the modern Olympic Movement.

However, as opposed to the Olympic Games, which happen every four years, Olympic Day is held annually to encourage people of all backgrounds, ages, and talents to participate in physical movements and acknowledge the principles that bring the Olympic community across the world together.

The date is the same every year, as it is also the anniversary of the International Olympic Committee, which was founded in 1894.

Every year Olympic Day is celebrated with a theme, and the theme for 2026 is Let's Move.

History of Olympic Day

The roots of Olympic Day go back to the renewal spirit of the modern Olympic Games that was led by Pierre de Coubertin, a French historian and educator.

Participants came together at the Sorbonne in Paris on June 23, 1984, to establish the International Olympic Committee that laid the foundation for the modern Olympic Movement.

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896, and Olympic Day was introduced in 1948 to pay tribute to the historic milestone.

The first celebration took place on June 23, 1948, with participation from nine national Olympic Committees such as Austria, Belgium, Canada, Greece, Great Britain, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Ever since, the observance has grown into a global movement that draws millions of participants all over the world.

The IOC officially acknowledged all National Olympic Committees in 1978 to organize and host the annual Olympic Day celebrations.

Later, in 1987, the Olympic Day Run became a central feature of the event, promoting active lifestyles through community participation.

The Significance of Olympic Day

The significance of Olympic Day is to promote active participation in physical activity and sports and simultaneously promote the values of the Olympic Movement.

The movement highlights that sports is for everyone regardless of gender, age, nationality, or physical ability.

Through Olympic Day, the IOC seeks to demonstrate how sport can unite people and create meaningful social impact beyond competition.

How Olympic Day Is Celebrated Around the World

Olympic Day is observed by a variety of activities that are organized by National Olympic Committees, sports organizations, schools, and local groups.

The common events usually consist of community runs, where participants of all ages can join and run together, and sports festivals, where people can try different sports and communicate with athletes and learn new skills.

Schools and institutions organize seminars, workshops, and exhibitions focusing on Olympic history, values, and the benefits of sport.

Group workouts, fitness challenges, cultural performances, and recreational sporting events bring communities together while encouraging active lifestyles.

Olympic Day is a worldwide celebration that commemorates the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Movement, encouraging people all over the world to learn, move, and discover through sport and physical activity.

From community runs and educational programs to fitness challenges and cultural events, Olympic Day reminds us that sport has the power to inspire, unite, and improve lives across the world.
