Take Your Child To The Library Day

Next Saturday, 7 February 2026

Observed annually every year on the first Saturday of February, Take Your Child to the Library Day encourages families to take kids to the library and introduce them to the many joys of reading.

This day is dedicated to helping kids view libraries as fun places where each book can take you to a different world.

Take Your Child to the Library Day intends to cultivate positive reading habits by making library visits a family experience.

Origin Story of Take Your Child to the Library Day

Celebrated for the first time in 2012, Take Your Child to the Library Day was established by a librarian named Nancy Stewart.

She got the idea when she saw that not nearly enough children are stepping into a library, and it would be a shame to grow up without even visiting one.

On this day, Nancy aimed to remind parents that libraries are safe, productive places that can help their kids grow.

The first Saturday of February was chosen to give families an easy weekend opportunity to visit their local library together.

Since then, libraries all throughout the United States and even abroad have celebrated the day with kid-friendly activities, storytime, and entertaining events.

How to celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day

Celebrate the day by taking a child in your family to the library and making it fun. immersive day for them.

Let them explore the library however they want, whether they want to pick a book, read, or just look through the shelves; let them be.

Help them sign up for their own library card so they feel a sense of ownership and excitement.

Even a short visit can leave a lasting impression and help turn the library into a place your child looks forward to returning to.
