National Ballpoint Pen Day is celebrated every year on June 10 to honor one of the most practical and beautiful inventions in modern history.

This day is a tribute to the Hungarian brothers László and György Bíró and the patent they filed on June 10, 1943, that forever changed the course of writing.

Ballpoint pens today are used by almost everyone across the world, from professionals to artists to writers to students and more.

National Ballpoint Pen Day gives us a chance to pause and acknowledge this tool and the revolution it has brought around in the world of writing, making it cleaner, easier, and more accessible for decades.

Background of National Ballpoint Pen Day

The current ballpoint pen that we know of today was invented by the Bíró brothers László and György. Fountain pens were the most common tools used for writing prior to their invention.

As classy as fountain pens looked, they had their shortcomings, like they smudged easily, leaked all over, and needed to be refilled frequently.

László Bíró was a journalist, and he was quick to notice that the ink used in newspapers dried way faster than the ones used in fountain pens.

Together with his brother, György, who was a chemist, he worked to create a pen that utilized a quick-drying and thicker ink.

The original design had a tiny rotating ball at the tip of the pen that transferred ink easily onto paper.

The brothers got the patent for this wonderful innovation on June 10, 1943. This design quickly became popular because it was portable, reliable, and created less mess than fountain pens.

The Royal Air Force adopted ballpoint pens during World War II, as they worked better at higher altitudes.

So, as time passed, ballpoint pens became one of the most commonly used writing instruments, marking June 10 as the ideal day to celebrate its significance.

How to Celebrate National Ballpoint Pen Day

In an era where technology has taken over our lives, this is the perfect moment to put away our keyboards and write the old-fashioned way.

Pick a ballpoint pen and start writing whatever you want, be it a journal entry, letter, poem, thoughts, to-do list, etc.

Writing by hand can be both creative and extremely relaxing. If you have too many pens scattered around, take some time out and organize them, test them, refill, or discard them.

The history of ballpoint pens is fascinating, so start exploring it and the story of the Bíró brothers.

Go out and buy yourself and your loved ones some ball pens along with journals so that they also get encouraged to write.

National Ballpoint Pen Day is the celebration of an invention that has brought around a massive revolution in communication, education, and daily life.

Even with the advancement of technology, the ballpoint pen remains a staple friend for writing, signing, and doing anything that requires a pen.
