National Crawfish Day is on April 17 every year, dedicated to one of the most versatile ingredients in Southern United States cuisine.

Shell Shack, in collaboration with National Day Calendar, established National Crawfish Day in 2020 to highlight the importance of this tiny but impactful crustacean and its rich cultural heritage.

Craw fish are also known as crayfish or mudbugs and are freshwater species of the lobster family popular for their sweet and bold flavor.

Crawfishes are a staple in Creole and Cajun cooking, which is popular in Louisiana, a state beloved for its food.

History and Cultural Significance

The roots of crawfish go back centuries, as these crustaceans have been a part of their cuisine for a long time, especially in the Indigenous communities like the Houma people of Louisiana, where crawfish are symbolized as a connection to the wetlands.

Acadian settlers in the 18th century brought adapted French cooking techniques to Louisiana, and with time, local ingredients were fused with these techniques, such as crawfish, which made the modern Cajun cuisine.

From being a humble household staple to the focal point of attraction in social gatherings, crawfish evolved majorly by the early 1900s, and crawfish boils became a cultural tradition.

Crawfish was officially declared the state crustacean in 1983, which solidified its impact on the regional identity.

How to Celebrate National Crawfish Day

To celebrate National Crawfish Day, get your friends and family together and whip up a huge batch of crawfish boil with your favorite sides and create some beautiful memories.

You can also explore authentic Southern flavors by trying out dishes such as gumbo or étouffée by either ordering takeout or making it yourself at home.

Several communities celebrate this day with dance, music, and a variety of crawfish dishes that you can participate in.

National Crawfish Day is not just a food day; it is a cultural symbol that represents heritage, ritual, and the joy of community.

Whether you're hosting a crawfish boil at home, attending a festival, or experimenting with a new recipe, this day offers you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in Southern culture.
