Every year on April 16, National Orchid Day is observed to celebrate one of the most popular and diverse flowers in the world.

Orchids are adorned for their unusual shapes, bright shades, and graceful beauty, which makes them a fan favorite among flower enthusiasts and gardeners alike.

With thousands of different species available across different climatic regions, orchids are mysterious and charming and have continued to capture and fascinate hearts for thousands of years.

National Orchid Day gives us the opportunity to learn more about these mystic flowers and their significance.

Origin of National Orchid Day

A couple from South Carolina, Mika and Faith Young, established National Orchid Day in 2015 in honor of their daughter’s memory, who passed away in 2014.

While volunteering at an orchid reserve in Mexico, they developed a profound admiration and fascination for orchids, so much so that they decided to name their daughter "Orchid."

Unfortunately, they lost their baby daughter during labor, and they created this day to find a meaningful way of remembering her.

But, to register National Orchid Day officially, they needed to raise $1500. So, they launched a Kickstarter campaign and opened pre-orders of honey from their own backyard as a reward for supporters.

Their story touched the hearts of so many people, and they managed to raise the full amount successfully just within a few hours.

Their story touched many people, and within just a few hours, they successfully raised the full amount needed.

Thus, they officially registered National Orchid Day, and it began growing popular in no time. National Orchid Day is now celebrated all across the globe by enthusiasts, making it a wonderful day that honors both orchids and the memory behind the day.
