National Lineman Appreciation Day
National Lineman Appreciation Day is commemorated on April 18 every year to acknowledge and honor the courage, expertise, and dedication of electrical linemen.
These skilled experts work relentlessly to maintain, repair, and build the power systems to keep our day-to-day lives running without any hassle.
Linemen play a crucial role in modern society maintenance as they are responsible for ensuring uninterrupted service to homes, hospitals, schools, etc., and restoring electricity after a thunderstorm
On National Lineman Appreciation Day, we appreciate the men and women for their work in upholding the integrity of the electrical grid and the risks they take to make sure that electricity is delivered efficiently and safely everywhere.
The Purpose and Significance Of Linemen
The purpose of linemen is to guarantee that electricity travels smoothly from power plants through distribution and transmission systems to homes, public services, businesses, and everywhere else.
Essential operations such as education, transportation, communication, and healthcare are able to run smoothly because of the work linemen do.
Due to the nature of their profession, which is physically demanding, they have to work in high-risk environments that are also very dangerous, as they have to routinely do the following:
- Climb high-voltage towers and tall poles.
- Work in extreme weather conditions like snow, heatwaves, thunderstorms, etc.
- Deal with live electrical wires.
- Conduct emergency repairs during natural disasters.
Hence, they not only have to be highly skilled and possess utmost technical expertise but also have to be confident, focused, courageous, and strictly adhere to safety protocols.
Linemen do not have any work-life balance, as they have to work for long, tenacious hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights.
They are usually called in at a moment’s notice during power outages where they have to forget about their personal lives and commitments to restore electricity for entire communities.
History of National Lineman Appreciation Day
National Lineman Appreciation Day began as a formal government recognition and the growing awareness of the dangerous and significant work done by electrical lineworkers.
It began on April 10, 2013, when Senate Resolution 95 was passed by the United States Senate that officially recognized April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day.
Large-scale natural disasters and other major events also influenced the creation of this day, such as Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which caused massive destruction throughout various U.S. states where thousands of linemen worked in dangerous conditions around the clock to restore power to millions of people.
Even before its official recognition, several communities, unions, and local groups were already working toward honoring the linemen.
The nation were aware of the risky nature of their jobs, as electrical linework is one of the most hazardous professions.
