History of National Crush Day

National Crush a Can Day has its roots in the history of canning and recycling. Back in 1795, Napoleon offered a reward for a way to preserve food for his army. This led Frenchman Nicolas Appert to invent a method of sterilizing food in cans in 1809. A year later, in 1810, British merchant Peter Durand patented the use of tin-coated iron cans, laying the foundation for modern canning.

By 1938, the first canned beer- Krueger Cream Ale- hit the market. Aluminum cans became common in the 1960s due to their lightweight and durable nature.

Recycling picked up momentum in 1970 with the first Earth Day, and aluminum cans became a recycling success story because they can be recycled endlessly. National Crush a Can Day was created to promote this eco-friendly habit reminding people to crush cans to save space and encourage sustainable living.
