National Cheddar Fries Day

Next Monday, 20 April 2026

National Cheddar Fries Day is celebrated on April 20 every year. It is the day for a basket of hot, crisp fries buried under melted cheddar, with that irresistible mix of salty, creamy, crunchy, and unapologetically messy comfort.

Whether you know them as cheddar fries or cheese fries, the idea is simple and genius: take something already universally loved and give it a molten cheddar upgrade because cheese makes everything better!

The History of National Cheddar Fries Day

National Cheddar Fries Day was founded in 2016 by Snuffer’s Restaurant and Bar.

However, the dish, though, almost certainly existed long before the holiday did. No one is fully sure when cheddar fries began, but they were likely created in the United States, and the broader idea of putting cheese on fries may have gained momentum around the time Cheez Whiz was introduced in 1953.

How to Celebrate National Cheddar Fries Day

1. Order the cheesiest version you can find

Skip the sensible side salad for one day. Go to your favorite diner, pub, burger joint, or fast-food stop and order cheddar fries like you mean it. Extra cheese is not excessive on April 20. It is respectful.

2. Make cheddar fries at home

This is the easiest way to celebrate if you want full control. Bake or fry your potatoes, season them well, and top with freshly shredded cheddar while the fries are still hot. Broil for a minute or two so the cheese melts properly. Finish with toppings like bacon bits, jalapenos, cchives, ranch and so on.

3. Try a regional twist

Give the day some personality. Add peri-peri seasoning, spicy queso, caramelized onions, or even tandoori-style toppings if you want to make it your own. Purists may raise an eyebrow, but good fries can handle creativity.
